What will you remember about Austria? Will it be the aroma of a Viennese kaffeehaus? The sound of Mozart’s music echoing through the Salzburg Cathedral? The burn in your quads as you finish your ski run on the world famous Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel? In Austria, every visit is unique.

Stroll the elegant boulevards of Vienna, thoroughly modern but surrounded by the city’s grand past. The Imperial Palace, the Spanish Riding School with its Lipizzaner horses, and the Schönbrunn Palace remind you that the Habsburg empire had its home here for centuries. Glimpse Art Nouveau buildings and wander through MQ, one of the largest museum complexes in the world – or grab a selfie with Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss at the nearby Belvedere Museum.

A few hours away in Salzburg, relive the von Trapp family’s adventures on Sound-of-Music-themed tours. In Mozart’s hometown you can hear his music everywhere. Explore amidst Baroque buildings and towering Alps. A few miles away investigate Hellbrunn Castle, with its hidden trick fountains.

Graz, Austria’s second largest city, has one of Europe’s best preserved historic town centers and is a UNESCO city of design. After investigating its medieval and Italian Renaissance buildings, head to the nearby village of Piber, where Lipizzaner horses have been bred for the Spanish Riding School for 400 years. Visit a vineyard for a glass of schilcher, the locally produced dry rosé, and a brettl, an assortment of cured meats, spreads, cheeses and pickles – or just kick back and enjoy the picturesque castles in the countryside.

Winter is magical in Austria. From a month before Christmas Eve almost every town square hosts a Christmas market. Enjoy a steaming mug of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts while you explore. In Vienna, join in the waltz at one of over 400 winter balls or ring in the new year at the State Opera or Volksopera with Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. Maybe you’d rather challenge yourself in the birthplace of alpine skiing, on world-famous runs in Kitzbühel, Innsbruck, Arlberg or other resorts.

No matter what your interest, Austria will stay in your memory forever.
